The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. SATURDAY, MAY 23, 1868.
The arrival of the English Mail, the long police case and other news compels us to hold over our usual leading article and much local matter. "We are requested by Dr. Cotterell, toe acting hospital surgeon, to solicit from our fair readers contributions of ■every description of rags for hospital purposes. "We are sure that this appeal will be cheerfully and responded to, for there are any number of ladies in Westport, and when were they ever asked in vain for anything that would afford relief to the sick and suffering? Fabrics of all kinds would be welcome we aro informed, and we have no doubt that. the doctor will express his cordial thanks to contributors of every description. We need hardly add that linen is the most useful, and consequently the most acceptable, but other textures will no doubt bo gratefully received. Mr Commissioner Kyunersley returned last night by the John Penn, and will no doubt resume active official .duty at once. However we may differ
with Mr Kyunersley on many im- ' portant points we are sincerely glad that ho has returned, and have no doubt that his presence will soon be beneficially felt in the immediate prosecution of many necessary public works.
A Warden's court was to have been held yestefday after the business of the Resident Magistrate's Court, but the late hour to which that sat prevented any possibility of business being proceeded with. There ai'e some very important cases for hearing, in some of which assessors are called in, and the court will accordingly sit at 9 o'clock this morning in order to get through with as much expedition as possible. The volunteers are specially reminded that a muster will take place on Mondaynext as per advertisement. Amongst other distinguished arrivals in Westport we may fairly class the Japanese troupe, who 'appear for one night in this town at the Apollo Music Hall. Unquestionably this company is without exaggeration, the most extraordinary set of performers that ever appeared in the southern hemisphere, and their entertainment has caused more wonder than any ever given to the public here. The troupe are Japanese in all verity, and their tricks are just as unknown and novel as themselves. They execute what would be considered impossible feats in all ways, and amongst others, who in New South Wales and Victoria patronised their performances,' may be mentioned 11. R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh (twice), Sir H. T. Manners Sutton, Major Greneral Chute, Lord Newry, His Excellency the Earl of Belmore and Countess, Lady Bowen, and a host of others. In this entertainment there is really no humbug of any kind, the feats are all they professto be and more, and all whether young or old can enjoy a most pleasant and withal novel evening's amusement. We may add that the theatre has been refitted, and the dress-circle particularly, will be kept most select. We can heartily recommend all who wish to see something new, to attend at the theatre, and we hope that the enterprise Mr Hamilton has shown in securing the company for to-night, will not go unrewarded.
A splendid bullock was brought over yesterday by the John Penn. Its weight is variously estimated at from 1200 to 1400 lbs. Whatever is the correct estimate, the animal is a picture, and this is not difficult to understand when it took first prize at a recent Agricultural Society's Show in New South "Wales. Judges of fine cattle would be well repaid bj an inspection. Mails will close for Nelson, New Plymouth and Auckland this day per s.s. Kennedy at 10a.m.
