CHARLESTON NEWS.

A meeting attended by a large number of respectable hotelkeepers, was held on Monday night, to consider what steps should be taken to protect their rights from unlawful encroachments. Mr H. Kennedy occupied the chair. Several of the gentlemen present enlarged upon the grievances which they labored under as respectable publicans, in having to contend unequally against a swarm of disreputable houses, which have recently sprung into existence, and to some extent monopolised the business of the town. Several remedies were suggested, but eventually it was decided that a protective association should be formed, to be called the Charleston Licensed Victuallers' Association, to whom should be entrusted the duty of adopting such measures as might be deemed necessary for the protection of the Licensed Victuallers. The attention of Volunteers is called to the announcement which appears in another column, of a general meeting, to be held this evening, for the purpose of electing officers for the No. 1. Company of Charleston Volunteers. We understand the Phoenix brewery, lately in the possession of Messrs. Speer and Clarke, has come into the possession of Mr Parker, the celebrated brewer of Brighton, who intends getting down from the Buller some additional plant, and commencing immediately thereafter to brew on a large scale.
