The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 1868.

The estimates for the Province of Nelson are at length to hand, and from them we make the following abstract of those items that specially refer to the South-west G-oldfields. The total estimated revenue or the Province, from all sources, is set dowu at £144,450, of which land revenue —including gold duty, is expected to contribute £38,000, and income from the South-west Goldfields, £30,000. The expenditure for the South-west Goldfields is set down as follows :

Commissioner's Department—Commissioner and resident magistrate, £700; three wardens and resident magistrates, £1,500 ; warden, £350 ; goldfields accountant and clerk to the bench, £350 ; six clerks, £1,625; clerical assistance (occasional), £l5O ; four bailiffs, £BOO ; overseer of works, £3OO ; two foremen, £SOO ; stationery, printing,advertising, and contingencies, £1,225.

Police Department £350 ; four sergeants at 14s 6d per day, £1,058 10s ; two detectives, £511; two senior constables at 13s Gd per day, £492s 15s; five mounted constables, £1,186 5s ; two senior constables at 13s, £474 10; eight firstclass constables at 12s 6d, £1,809; six second-class constables at lis 6d, £1,247 5s ; accoutrements and travelling expenses, £1,000; forage and saddlery, £6OO ; contingencies, £275 15s.

Gaol Department—Gaoler, Westpoi't, £275; senior warder at 12s 6d, £226 2s 6d ; warder at lis 6d, £207 15s 6d; rations for prisoners, £912 10s ; gaoler, Charleston, at 12s Gd, £226 2s 6d ; rations for prisoners, £4<7l 10s ; gaoler, Brighton, at 12s Gd, £226 2s 6d; rations for prisoners, £296 lis 3d ; rations for prisoners, Cobden, £llß 12s 6d ; blankets, tools, and clothing, £336 lis 3d; maintenance of prisoners, Hokitika, £300; conveyance of prisoners and lunatics, £IOO ; witnesses in criminal cases, £2OO. How the Hokitika item arises we are unaware. The next item for the revision of mining regulations is £SO. Survey-Department District Surveyor, £350: Assistant do., £300; Draughtsman, £150; labor, tents and sundries, £BSO. Harbour Department Harbormaster, Westport, £3OO ; Charleston, £192 ; Brighton, £96; Mokihinui, £96; Grey (half) £96; Signalman, Westport, £192; Grey do., £96; boat's crew, "Westport, £350; contingencies, £2O. Hospitals Westport, £I2OO ; Grey, £ISOO ; Charleston, £9OO ; Brighton, £6OO. On the second item, that relating to Grcymouth, we shall have more to say another time. "We may inform our readers en passant, that it is the moiety of the expense of the Greymouth Hospital, Nelson and Westland contributing equal proportions. The next item is £3OO for charitable aid; what that means we do not at present know.

A number of items follow, the only ones that we have any interest in appearing to be Education, £6600 ; Volunteers, £350 ; Eewards to Constables Lambert and Hunter, £SO. The amounts for West Coast roads and other public works are set down as follows: -- Buller Valley and tributaries £3000; G-rey Valley, including road on north bank, £4500 ; Ahaura-road, £2000; maintenance of coast road and Charleston streets, including extension coast road northwards, £3OOO ; maintenance of road to Addison's and extension to Brown's terrace ; Westport to Caledonian-terrace, £1000; branch roads to new diggings, £2OOO. Build-ings—Custom-house, Westport, £400; Post-office extension, Westport and Charleston, £250; warden's house, Charleston, £250; Survey-office, Charleston, £7O; gaol extension, Westport, £330 ; other buildings, repairs, and fittings, £700; mooring posts, anchors, and other gear, and removing snags, £IOOO ; clearing and fencing cemetery and hospital reserve, Westport roads thereto, and other streets, £IOOO ; Westport jetties and i

protection of new road, £2OOO. In this issue we have no space for comment, but content ourselves with simply giving the items as published. Their consideration by the Council will commence this week.
