Tee complete census returns for the province of Nelson, are published in the Gazette of the 11th inst. The following abstract, will no doubt be interesting to many of our readers. The total population of the city of Nelson is set down as 5652 ; of which 2295 were males, and 2657 females. The Waimea contains 1405 males, and 1282 females. At Motueka there are 1330 males, and 1121 females ; Collingwood 602 males, 376 females ; Amuri, 523 males, to 83 females. In Westland North the population is 9116 males, and 1495 females, made up as follows : Upper Buller, 159 males, 6 females; Wangauui, 20 males, 0 females ; Mokihinui, 560 males, 54 females. This latter number has been greatly reduced since the census was taken. Waimongoroa, 454 males, 14 females; Westport, 1112 males 388 females ; Waite's 1532 males, 205 females ; Charleston, IS9I males, 344 females; Brighton, 1042 males, 251 females ; Cobden, 576 males, 151 females ; Inangahua, 154 males, 3 females; Little Grey, 150 males, 4 females; Moonlight 254 males, 8 females; Twelve Mile ; 840 males, 37 females ; Upper Grey, 372 males, 30 females. The total population of the province is thus 23,814. In Westland North there are 4660 acres held as freehold, and as leasehold but the total amount fenced, is only 297 acres. The land broken up not under crop is acres ; in wheat and oats 50 acres, only a quarter acre however of the first mentioned cereal; in sown grass, 23$ acres; potatoes, 46 acres ; garden or orchard, 28 acres, and other smaller quantities under different crops, making a totalofonly acres of the whole quantity occupied. The stock in Westland North, is set down as follows : —horses 441, including 17 brood mares; mules or asses, 5; cattle, 534; sheep, 2091; goats, 55 ; pigs, 668 ; poultry, 2639. The total stock in the province is, horses 4277 ; mules and asses, 24 ; cattle 15,894 ; sheep 513,799 ; goats 746; pigs 8822; poultry 42,030 head. Westland North under the head of manufactories is put down as containing, 3 breweries, 1 colliery, 3 steam saw-mills, 63 cement crushing machines, 3 printing offices, and 3 other manufactories uot specified. In Westland North it appears that when the last census was taken in 1864, there were no inhabitants, for the whole present population 10,611, is set down as increase since that time.
