Correspondence.
To the 'Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston Argus. Sir, —Having had occasion to appear as plaintiff this morning in a civil action before Dr Giles, E.M., I feel it as a duty towards my fellow-citizens to represent the very uncivil, or rather the most insulting manner in which I. as appearing as a subject of the Queen, was treated by policeman Williams in court —placed, as I ought to be, under the supposed protection of the Bench. I do not write this under any vindictive feeling, but merely to afford, if possible for the future, the proper protection which any citizen is duly en "J titled to.
The simple insult committed was this—that during my evidence and cross-examination, each and every respectiul position adopted by me in court, was impulsively and practically repelled by the said policeman, reminding the court more of a person undergoing squad drill, as a volunteer, than that of a person maintaining the dignity of a witness before court; and this without the slightest notice being taken by the Bench. Had I been a criminal undergoing examination in a dock, such liberties on the part of a constable in the court where system prevailed, would not have been allowed to have taken place without a severe rebuke from the Bench. Thinking I am in duty bound towards my fellow-citizens to make this public. I am, yours respectfully, G-eo. Somneb. Westport, 14th April.
