THE QUEEN AND THE RITUALISTS.

Thereare some curious circumstances attending the appointment of Bishop I Selwyn, of New Zealand, to the Bishopric of Lichfield. It was known that the see was offered to him in the i first instance, and that he declined it. Lord Derby then cast about for another nominee, and pitched upon a clergyman whose name it would hardly be fair to give. On mentioning the name to the Queen, Her Majesty said, « Dr. v who is he ? I neverheard of him before." This was an awkward beginning ; and on Lord Derby pro-

ceeding to explain, it came out that he was a Ritualist. This was enough for the Queen, who at once refused her sanction. Lord Derby had all his labours to go over again; but he 'pitched upon another clergyman with just the same measure of success. It was again discovered that the clergyman named was of ritualistic tendencies, and again the Royal veto was interposed. • Matters then became serious. Dr Selwyn was again appealed to, and, as much in obedience to the personal wishes of the Queen as to the advantges of the situation, he yielded his reluctant assent. It would thus appear that Her Majesty inherits from her great-grandfather the scrupulous care he used, according to ! his lights, in the appointment of the chief pastors of the Church. — London correspondent of Daily 'Review.
