The s.s. Kennedy arrived from Ilokitika via Groymouth yesterday morning. Captain Carey reports having left Ilokitika on Monday at 2.30 p.m.; arrived at the Grey at 6 the same evening ; left at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday ; arrived off the Puller bar at 1.30 a.m., crossing at 7 o'clock. Experienced strong S.W. weather throughout the passage. Captain Carey also reports a very heavy bar at the Grey. The Kennedy left again for Nelson on last evening. The p.s, Nelson, Captain Wliitwell, from Nelson, entered the river at 3 p.m., yesterday. She reports having left Nelson on Tuesdaylast at G p.m., and put iu at Tutaranui at 11 ■the same evening; left again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, arriving hero as above. Heavy weather prevailed during the passage. The Nelson will leave for Greymouth and Ilokitika ai 7 p.m to-day.

Tun John Penn. —This new steamer, owned by Mr Johnston, the cattle importer, und destined for use on the West Coast trade, is thus described by the Australasian :—"She was built by the Thames Ironwork, Norwich, and Ship-building Company, from designs and specifications prepared in New Zealand, and combines all the qualities ncccssay to lit her ■for the particular trade in which she is to be engaged, namely, in carrying passengers, cattle, and general cargo between the ports of Nelson, Bullor, and Greymouth, on the West Coast. She has excellent sea-going qualities, as was proved on her voyage from England, and a (high rate of speed, so that she is well fitted to contend with the rough weather which she ■will have to encounter during the winter •months. But her most striking qualities arc her light flotation and extreme handiness. She will carry her full compliment of passengers, fifty tons of cargo, and seventylive head of fat cattie, on a draught of water no greater than six and a-half feet, so that the river bars which she will have to cross will be no serious barrier in her way. Then the character of her propelling apparatus is such as to render her except ionably amenable to control. She has two screws, worked by separate engine-power, and disconnected, so that she can put on full power ahead at one side astern, on the other. This enables her to turn in her own length, and makes her as handy as a boat. To her the river entrances of the West Coast will present little difficulty, and their dangers will be reduced to a minimum. The passenger accommodation of the l'enn is excellent. Not being intended for long voyages, it was not necessary to provide her with olaborato sleeping accommodation, and her whole breadth has been thrown into tin; saloon, but there are curtains to close in the side spaces when required for dormitories, and every ingenious contrivances by which between thirty and forty beds can be made up in a few minutes. A commodious ladies, sleeping cabin has also been provided, in which all necessary privacy can be obtained. Forward there is a comfortable and commodious second cabin, only less elegant than the saloon, and quite as convenient. The cattle accommodation is also very complete. Forty beasts can be. stowed below, and there is a steam-winch to facilitate their discharge, and thirty-live can stand on deck without discomfort to the passengers either fore or aft."
