The time for the reception of claims to be entitled to vote, closes this month, and forms of application con be obtained at the officeof the Westport Times. Holders of miners rights are both entitled to vote, or to be nominated as representatives. At present Mr G. W. Home, the newly-elected member for the Provincial Council is in the field. The nomination of candidates will take place at Westport, on Saturday, the 4th April, and the poll if demanded on the Thursday following. St. Patrick's Day.—To-morrow will be a holiday at the banks in honor of good St Patrick, who might well be chosen as patron saint of New Zealand, as she enjoys the same immunity from reptile life, which Ireland enjoys through the charm of the saint. The Fenian demonstration takes place tomorrow, and the first mass will be celebrated in the new Catholic Church in the morning, and vespers in the evening.
Eesident Magistrate's Court and Police News.—There were no police cases for hearing on Saturday, and consequently no business was transacted at the Court. It well open at 10 a.m. this day. We are glad to chronicle so few cases of crime in our locality. The police have had light work lately, and on Saturday not even an inebriate was brought up. The general dulness seems even to extend to drunkenness, and it is with great pleasure, we record the fact. Several of the out-stationed officers are called in to increase the force for Tuesday, but the procession is expected to he of a most orderly character.
Mr Cabhmore's Sale.—We are requested to draw attention to the sale this day by Mr Eobertson, of the premiseHadjoining the Adelphi Theatre, in the occupation of Mr Oashmore,
Latest Intelligence.—We are indebted to the courtesy of the captain of the Challenge, for late Hokitika papers, which contain news from Queensland and Sydney to the 6th March. Dull State op Westport.—Saturday night last was certainly both for weather and business the dullest one we have over seen on the Buller. The hotels were closed before their time, and the streets looked so deserted and woebegone, that we were glad to get away to bed to forget the melancholy conjured up by such a state of things. South Spit.—We are glad to perceive that some of the residents near the Buller have still some good faith in its future prosperity. Mr John Leydon, proprietor of the Carrier's Arms Hotel, South Spit, has lately made extensive alterations and additions to the above hotel, having added a fine laryje dining.room and six bedrooms, all of which are nicely painted, decorated, and well furnished. We trust he may find sufficient increase in his business to quickly repay him for his outlay.
