FIGHTING AT OPOTIKI.
TWO EUROPEANS WOUNDED. {From the Daily Southern Cross.) The cutter Whitby arrived in harbor last evening, bringing intelligence of a fight between the Militia and Hauhaus
at Opotiki. Two militiamen having been wounded—Private Fredk. Jones, bullet wound through the breast; and Private M. Glennan, wounded in the thigh (severely). Eight of the Hauhaus were picked up dead, and it is believed several others have shared the same fate. About twenty of the Hauhaus were badly wouuded.
FURTHER PARTICULARS. The schooner Jane arrived in harbor shortly after the AVhitby, and we have received the following from our own -correspondent at Tauranga : The p.s. Sturt arrived here from Opotiki this afternoon at six o'clock, having on board Major St. John and Mr Mair, and brings intelligence of a fight having taken place near the spot known as Wilson's station at Opotiki which resulted in two ef our men, named Frederick Jones and Michael Grlennan, being severely wounde 1, an I eight or ten of the enemy killed. -The Sturt starts to-morrow for Maketu, for the purpose of conveying a number of Aia.vas to the of strife
The Sturt made the run up to Opotiki from Wellington in sixty hours, head wind all the way, having left the latter place at half-past one p.m. on Saturday. The Sturt had a rapid passage from Onehunga to Wellington, which was 'done in forty hours.
