The s.s. Wallabi, having been repaired in Nelson proceeded to Wanganui; took in cattle and sheep for Westport, and left at 6 p.m. on Tuesday with the wind blowing W.N.W. ; Straits, and was obliged vo put into Tuturuaexperienced very strong wind across the nui, where she dropped anchor at 4 p.m. on Wednesday ; lay there until Saturday, when the wind having moderated she left at 6 pm.; encountered strong S.W. wind all the way down ; crossed the bar yesterday morning and came to her old moorings at 11.30 a.m. The s.s. Beautiful Star steamed safely over the bar yesterday at 9 a.m ; by the Purser we have Otago and Wanganui files. She left Wanganui bound for Westport, at 4 p.m. on Sunday the 16th ult. with fine weather ; at 6 p.m. breeze freshened ; at 8 p.m. increased to a gale with heavy sea ; double-reefed fore-and-aft canvas, lee rail constantly under water; at 10 p.m. wind and sea increasing in violence; shipping large quantities of water fore-and-aft; at 11 p.m. for safety battened main hatches down, and threw about 100 sheep overboard. At midnight no improvement, took in all sail and steamed head to sea. Opened hatches to save stock ; at 10 a.m. a heavy sea struck the ship washing away the binnacle and stopping the engines. On examination found the air pump gone; at 8 a.m. shook out reefs and made for Nelson, steaming slowly. Arrived oft* Boulder Bank at 6 p.m. Monday ; got a new air pump bucket cast, and all damage repaired ; left Nelson on Thursday at 7 a.m., put into Tuturanui, lay there until 7 p.m. on Saturday when she steamed for Westport; she passed the Wallaby off Cape Farewell, and anchored in the Buller at 9 a.m. yesterday morning. The p s. Southland will leave for Hokitika on Tuesday carrying passengers for conveyance by the Sarah and Mary to the Maryborough gold-fields. The schooner Rambler experienced very heavy weather on her trip from the Grey. She left Greymouth on Tuesday and crossed the bar on Saturduy morning. We understand that the whole of her cargo will be transhipped to the Southland.
