MEETING TO ESTABLISH A BANK AT ADDISON'S.
The committee appointed to get a bank established at Addison's Flat, called a meeting of miners on Thursday night, which was largely attended. Mr Clune, on being voted to the chair, stated that a deputation had waited on the managers of the Bank at Westport, to learn if it was their intention to reopen their agencies at Addison's, and they informed them that, under present circumstances, it was not, and when informed by the deputation, that the diggers had agreed to support the first bank that would open there; one of them intimated that he did not place much confidence in any arrangements the digger's would come to, so the object of the committee in calling this meeting, was to submit to it a resolution which he passed, they would carry out, and let this gentleman see that he had formed an erroneous opinion of the miners of Addison's Flat, and if the miners did carry it out, he had not the slightest hesitation in saying, judging from promises made by a certain gentleman, that before ten days, we should have a bank established at Addison's. He then called on Mr Galaher to propose the first resolution. Mr Galaher then came forward and said that the committee had met last night, and the gentlemen that formed the deputation had given him to understand that one of the managers had suggested that they should write to head quarters at Hokitika, but he could not see the force of that. Perhaps if they did write to Hokitika, the matter might be treated with perfect indifference, and he considered it was as much to the interest of the banks as it was te the miners and storekeepers to communicate with head quarters, if it were required. One thing was certain, that an agency of a bank was greatly needed in the district, and they would have it yet — (Cheers)—and if they did not get it shortly, they would have to put their heads together to obtain it,which would answer the same purpose; but «tkere was one grand point to work upon, and
if that was carried out he felt confident that they should have a bank here ia less than three weeks—that one thing was thafc the miners should be unanimous ; and although the committee had been to the trouble and expense of going to the Buller to seek a personal interview with the managers, which he could not say had met with a favorable result at present. It was their intention
to use their utmost energy to obtain their object, but nothing could be done unless the miners supported them. It had been said that the miners could not be unanimous, and in order to contradict this statement, and show the bank managers that the miners were not what they were supposed to be, and could carry out a resolution if they were so inclined ; he would therefore urge upon them the absolute necessity of dealing with one.Bauk, and he thought as Mr Dargaville had entertained a more favorable view of the
reguisition that any of the others, it was only courtesy to him that he should be patronized. He then proposed the following resolution, " That all the miners of Addison's Flat sell their gold to the Union Bank until there be an agency re-opened at Addison's Flat by some of the Banks-" Seconded by Mr Coyne, and carried unanimously. A vote of thanks was duly accorded to the Chairman, after which the meeting dispensed.
