WRECK OF THE WILLIAM MISKIN. SUPPOSED LOSS OP THE STAR OP TASMANIA. LOSS OP LIFE. On Sunday the 2nd inst and Monday the 3rd, the Timaru district was visited by a gale unsurpassed in its effects. The Timaru was at anchor at Timaru and rode with the gale in safety. The William Miskin was also at anchor, but had no tackle to ride out the gale. She anchored in Timaru roadstead on Sunday the 3rd inst, and landed her passengers the same day. Between 3 and 4 o'clock on Monday afternoon, the seas were observed to wash over her, and one of the seamen, James M'Donald, was washed overboard, and half-past three on Tuesday morning she struck on a rocky promintory and soon after went to pieces, but fortunately the remainder of the crew were saved.

On land the gale was as bad, and at Opihi the wife and family of a Mr Salter were swept away before bis eyes, without his being able to render them any assistance. A number of houses, mills, &c, were also swept away by the flood. From Dunediu and Omaru the news is equally bad, and a report is current that the splendid ship Star of Tasmania is lost. The protective works at Dunedin have been swept away.
