The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1868.

What are the Committee appointed at the meeting held some time since, to take measures for the protection of the river bank about 1 The river is still washing it away, " not by feet" as was stated at the meeting " but by yards," but as far as we can ascertain, the Committee have made no sign. There was a great deal of talk, but it seems to h e produced but little result, and rapidly the township of Westport is being submerged, and if this state of things continue, in a little while the tramway will have ceased to exist. The attention of the Government should be at once drawn seriously to the matter, and our new member would be showing what he is made of if he presped the matter earnestly upon the attention of the Superintendent; or else better entrust the subject to Mr Crate, who would, without a doubt, bring it under the notice of the Executive. It is lamentable to see the town of Westport being thus destroyed without an attempt being made to avert its destruction. With the exception of Stanley Wharf, nothing has been done to restore or rebuild the wharves, and therefore the river banks look desolate, and vessels are put to great inconvenience in discharging cargo, which is a great detriment to the advancement of the port. There cannot be the slightest doubt but that it was in consequence of the insecure condition of the bank that the Wallaby met with the accident she did the other day, and while it is in the present condition we shall frequently hear of holes being punched in the bottoms of vessels by snags, &c. We thus draw atention

to the subject, hoping that the committee have not gone to sleep. If the town of Westporfc is to be preserved, the sooner the protection of the river bank is commenced, the better. The work will have to bo done, and every day renders it not only more difficult, but more expensive.
