MR CAMPBELL AND THE TRAMWAY.
(To the Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston Argus.) Sib, —In the explanatory statement given by Mr Campbell in your issue of February 10th, he enquires from me and wishes to know who are the people eager to take shares in the tramway company if brought before the public. Eor the information of himself and perhaps many residents both here and Charleston who were not residing at either place, I will give you the reasons the tramway company failed to be carried out. "When the company started, this place and Charleston had not obtained a sufficient stability to risk the money that was wanted, namely, £I4OO, and presuming we were staple enough, to raise the amount for the tramway, there was one circumstance connected at the time I mention that had more effect in stopping the company from rising into existence. That was, Mr Nees promised to lay a tramway frora the Buller to Charleston and to be satisfied with a protection for a number of years, and that was the greatest reason that the tramway company failed. To your questions who will take shares, bring the prospectus before the public, have a meeting at any public place, and I firmly believe your question will be answered, at the present there cannot be a doubt in the mind of the most sceptical that a tramway from here to Charleston would be remunerative ; and now that we are the depot in a measure for Charleston they must and will put aside any petty jealousy that existed because the Buller started the movement. Tours, &c, S. Ellis.
