The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 1868.

Although the election is over it will be seen by the Polling List that the two principal candidates have run a dead-heat, so that until Wednesday next, when the official declaration takes place, it is impossible to say who is elected, as the decision 011 that point rests with the Returning Officer, though it may not be a very difficult matter to guess in what direction his right will be exercised. The battle has been well fought by the respective candidates and conducted with general good humour. Now it is all over, Westport will return to its usual somnolent state. Of the candidates there can be no doubt but that the most eligible will be selected by the Commissioner, and we hope that he will prove himself worthy of the choice, as his actions will be closely watched and scrutinised. With regard to Mr Graham, we must congratulate him on the position in which he stands ; for nobody can say that ho was a defeated man. At present he is as much the chosen of the people as Mr Smith. He has stood the contest well, and comes out of it with honor to himself and a reputation that will stand him in good stead at another time. The less said about Mr. Mr Crate perhaps the better. He has obtained exactly seven votes with all his perseverance. " His Honor" and the inhabitants of Nelson will now know the value at which he is estimated in Westport. Woe to the occupants of the Coal-Reserve! for petitions without number will be presented to the Provincial Council of Nelson, headed with all the weight and influence of Mr Crate and his seveu merry-men. As for Mr Goodwin, the present has been a lesson to him, which all young politicians must learn, and there is no doubt he will do better another time. Let us hope that the best man may be chosen, and that Westport will not regret having selected him. All parties did their best, and now that the mimic warfare has ceased, all parties should unite to give their aid in assisting their member to promote the general weal, and especially the prosperity of Westport.
