CHARLESTON NEWS.
There was only one case in the Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, namely, Ellis v. Grey, the claim being £2O, ibr goods, in which a judgment was given for plaintiff, there being no defence. On Wednesday, the Bay favor"ed us with a very smooth bar, and the schooners Ann and Alice made good use of it by taking their departure for the South. There were no vessels outside waiting to come in, so that, excepting the Ada, undergoing repair, the harbor is destitute of shipping, a thing which has not occurred for a long time.
Whatever effect may result from the petition sent forward to the Superintendent, it is now certain that Mr Dutton will leave Charleston on Friday. It appears that Mr Warden Lightband on his arrival, a day or two ago at Westport, was not sufficiently recovered from his late accident to undertake the ride to Charleston, and so went on in the same steamer to G-reymoutb, and Mr Dutton will go down and meet him in his own district. We believe Mr Lightband may be expected here in about a week's time. In consequence of Mr Dutton's departure, the duties of the Resident Magistrate's Court will be entered upon by Mr Broad, R.M., probably in the beginning of next week. We understand arrangements are being made for a benefit to be given at an early date, to Miss Annie Merton, of the Bijou Theatre. Some attractive additions are being made to the strength of the company, and all available talent will, no doubt, be brought to bear on the occasion above alluded to.
