THE LATE FATAL ACCIDENT.
(To the Editor of the Wcstpurt Times and Charleston Argus.' I '' Sib, —As there are several incorrect versions of the late fatal accident at the Totara Eiver to Mr \V. Allen, of Charleston, will yon kindly publish my version, which I believe will be confirmed by the other four persons present, The tide at the time of the accident was about half-ebb, but the current was not so strong as usual, in consequence of the neap tides and a S.W. wind causing a roll in.
When I observed Mr Allen ride toward the river, I prepared to go over' for him, but he upon coining opposite a point of the river where it run narrow, turned his horse in. I immediately cooeyed and waved him to go back, but he rode on uutil the hers swam a length or so, when he tune 1 for a few lengths. He then return.-d the same distance. Wl en he again turned, he came out of the river, I thought for the purpose of coming to the boat, instead of which, he rode about 120 yards further towards the surf I again cooeyed loudly anl waved to him, but he appeared t > notice Larry North and another man who were on the opposite side of the river, end nob to heed me; they too, were waving and calling him to go back. When I saw him persist-and. saw that he would be in danger, I pulled fast down the river, and when I considered I was near, I glanced ovtr mv shoulder and saw an object on my right. I found it was his hat. I t':en saw the horse, already dead, about twenty yards away, and the man rather nearer with his head under water, and using his arms as in the act of swimming, but on reaching the spot with the boat, he had disappeared, and did not again come to the surface. I righted-about and pulled further towards the surf for some time.
Those persons who were on the bank, state that the deceased appeared to lose his presence of mind ; that he continued to pull the reins until the horse turned over and swallowed enough water to suffocate him. lam, &c, - U** S. J. Lorming, Ferryman.
