CHARLESTON NEWS.
A meeting of gentlemen interested in the Charleston district was held last evening, at Kennedy's Melbourne Hotel, to endeavor to secure the return of a member for the Nelson SouthWest Goldfields, who would represent the views and interests of the miners and others resident in this district. Mr Connolly occupied the chair, and after some discussion, a general resolution was carried that a public meeting of electors should be convened at the Camp Eeserve on Saturday next to ascertain their views on the subject. There was a report of a rush to the back of the ranges, but we have not yet learnt whether there is any foundation for it. It will be seen by an advertisement which appears in another column, that the Comedy Troupe are to make their first appearance in Charleston this evening at the Bijou Theatre, Empire Hotel. There is an impression that the agreeable reminiscence called up by the above names will not be marred in the persons of Miss Annie Merton, Mr W. H. Newton, Mr J. W. Black, Mr Singer, and the other gentlemen who have been brought together to form the present Company, the favorable critiques which have everywhere preceded ami followed the first two named, and all that we know of the others, predisposing one to look forwar.l, in favorable expectations to a rare treat. We hope to see a attendance at the theatre this evening.
An immense number af signatures are being attached to the petition to the Superintendent, praying for Mr Dutfcon's retention in the district. The petition itself, with a large number of signatures attached has been forwarded to the care of Mr Commissioner Kynnersley, to be followed in another day or two by a supplement of signatures.
