CHARLESTON HOSPITAL.
The adjourned public meeting of those interested in the Charleston Hospital, which was to have been held on Tuesday evening, again failed for want of attendance, no one apparentlybeing sufficiently concerned in the welfare and conduct of the institution to brave the raiu and attend, except the members of Committee, who, having formed themselves into a meeting, had the subjoined report and statement of cash read and adopted : " .Report op the Charleston Hospital Committee.—3lst Dec, 1867. "Athough this is the first report emanating from the present Committee, it is the second which has been laid before the public. The former one, which was read and confirmed at a public meeting held on the 13th September, gave an account of the building of the Hospital and its maintenance up to that date, with a statement of money received and spent. This showed a total of cash received to that date of £353 5s 6d, and an expenditure of £325 6s, leaving a balance of £27 19s. Since then there has been received the sum of £633 14s 6d, and expended the sum of £565 8s Bd, leaving a balance in the Bank on the 31st December of £96 4s lOd, out of which had to be paid the December accounts, amounting in all to £9O 3s 7d. The money received as above, £633 14s 6d, consisted of £450 from G-overnment, £l4B 14s 4d net proceeds of public entertainments, £lB 3s 8d from subscriptions, £lO 10s board money, and £6 6s 6d from box in Court House. The expenditure comprises £lO3 7s 4d for completing the building, out-houses, and roads ; £ll7 6s 6d for necessary furnishings ; £163 17s 6d for provisions ; £lll for salaries ; and £6B I7s 4d for sundries.
< " It will be observed that the principal source of revenue during last quarter has been derived from Government assistance and the proceeds of
various charitable entertainments ; but the Committee feeliug dissatisfied with this state of things, and believing that the public are willing to subscribe to a fund for keeping up so worthy an institution, have determined to proceed at once to canvass the town for subscriptions. With regard to the support to be derived from miners, it being found that many objections were entertained against a yearly payment in one sum, it has been decided to take, in lieu thereof, monthly subscriptions of Is Gd, and the collector (Mr Bain) is now engaged in receiving the same.
" The number of patients received into the Hospital since its establishment in August is 39, of which number 27 have been discharged cured, 4 removed to Nelson. 1 died, and 7 are in the ward.
" The patient who died—Robert Saunders—became insane shortly after his admission, and continued thus till his death, necessitating the temporary employment for some weeks of an assisaut warder.
" The surgeon appointed—Dr Morton —having, on account of ill health, requested the committee to allow his place to be taken by Dr M'Mullin, the latter is now acting as Hospital Surgeon.
" Of the nine gentlemen elected at last public meeting to form the committee, the following six continue to act: —Messrs J. li. Dutton (chairman), Hennelly, Bain, Kennedy, M'Coy, and Cullen, together with Mr Gascoigne, recently added by the committee, making seven in number, leaving two vacancies, caused by the retirement of Mr Mason and Mr Nees, to be filled up. " A. Betce Ba.in, " Chairman." Cash Account, received.
