Narrow Escape of Mr Kochfort, the Coosix Engineer for "Westxand. —The West Coast Times of the 6th says :—" The G-oldfields Secretary, aceompanied hy the County Engineer, Mr Kochfort, proceeded yesterday on horseback to the Grey for the purpose of inspecting the damage done by the late flood at Greyinouth. As the latter gentleman was crossing the "Waimea Creek on horseback, both horse and rider suddenly disappeared. Mr Rochfort, however, with great presence of mind flung himself from the saddle and swam on shore, where his horse followed him. Ultimately he and the Goldfields Secretny < r jssed. in a boat, swimming their horses over, and proceeded towards the Grey."
