TIMES OF MAILS CLOSING On and after January 1, 18G8. The times of closing the Overland Mails at the Post-office, Westport, will be as follows: For Greymouth and Hokitika, per Tasmanian Maid, this day, at 3 p.m. For Charleston, St. Kilda, Brighton, and Greymouth, at 8 a.m. on Monday in each week. For Charleston, St. Kilda, and Brighton, at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and Friday. For Addison's Flat, at 8 a.m. on Monday and Thursday. For Mokihiuui, at time of high water on Monday and Thursday. MAILS WILL AItRIV At the Post-office, Westport— From Greymouth, Brighton. St.*Kilda, and Charleston, on Friday, at 5 p.m. From Brighton, St. Kilda, and Charleston, on Wednesday and Saturday, at 5 p.m. From Addison's Flat, on Monday and Thursday, at 11 a.m. From Mokihimii, on Tuesday and Friday. Narrow Escape of Mr Kochfort, the Coosix Engineer for "Westxand. —The West Coast Times of the 6th says :—" The G-oldfields Secretary, aceompanied hy the County Engineer, Mr Kochfort, proceeded yesterday on horseback to the Grey for the purpose of inspecting the damage done by the late flood at Greyinouth. As the latter gentleman was crossing the "Waimea Creek on horseback, both horse and rider suddenly disappeared. Mr Rochfort, however, with great presence of mind flung himself from the saddle and swam on shore, where his horse followed him. Ultimately he and the Goldfields Secretny < r jssed. in a boat, swimming their horses over, and proceeded towards the Grey."
