THE ELECTION.

(To tJte Editor of tlie Westport Times and Charleston Argus.) Sir, —Will you allow me, through the columns of your useful paper, to make a few remarks upon an important question, viz., the forthcoming election. There has been several attempts made to ventilate this question; but, so far as the public are concerned, no steps have been taken to organise a committee. The people of Westport, some time ago, were in no wise mealymouthed or choice in their remarks about their representative, because he opposed increased representation in the Council two sessions ago. Now that we have the privilege of electing another member of Council, I am surprised at the indifference and apathy shown by the Westport electors about such an important public duty. There will be several important questions brought before the Council at the next session affecting the real interests and prosperity of this district, and it is desirable that we send the best man obtainable to represent us ; and in order to do this, I would suggest to the electors the necessity of calling a meeting upon an early day to organise an efficient committee, so that we may have time to enquire into the merits of the various candidates brought forward. What is worth doing is surely worth doing well. I am, &c, Pro Bono Publico. Westport, 4th January, 18G8.
