PROGRESS OF MASTERTON.

The attention which Masterton has received from Ministers of the Crown during the past year or so emphasises the importance to which this district has risen. The town is progressing and the population slowly but surely increasing. The farming interests are greater than in pre-war days, and the wealth from the land is providing substantial revenue for the Government. Business is expanding and more people are employed than formerly, and the town generally has grown to such an extent that no Government professing to have the interests of the people at heart can treat it as if it were still in the _village stage. Gradually the services associated with the growth of the town are improving, and there is even a prospect of the Rimutaka monstrosity being removed, which would add further to the advancement of the town. With the Government paying more attention to our welfare there must eventually come support from the business community of the city of Wellington, which serves as our export outlet. It is unfortunate that sleeping sickness is so common among the business people of Wellington that the interests of the Wairarapa have been neglected by them —interests so vitally associated with those of Wellington itself. Once Wellington displays the spirit of Auckland, then the Wairarapa as a whole will, we confidently predict, make headway to a startling extent.
