YOU MUST BE 40 TO REALLY ACT —
SAYS SIR CEDRIC HAEDVvICKE. Actors can’t act, in the opinion of Si; Cedric Hardwicke, the celebrated English character player, until they are 40 years old. By that time, he believes, they have, if they started young, been long enough in the business to know all the tricks. “By the tune they reach 40 they have sampled life and are literally able to live the characters they are playing,” said the Englishman, who plays Dean Harcourt in the Cosmopolitan production of the Lloyd C. Douglas bestselling novel, “Green Light,” which comes to the Regent Theatre on Saturday- as a First National release. Sir Cedric, who is 42 has, by his own confession been an actor for only two years. He lias been learning the business of dramatics, however,' for some
twenty-five years, having gone on to the stage while he was hardly more than a boy. "Acting,” declares the titled Englishman, who was knighted by the late King George V for his contributions to dramatics, "is something like learning to play the piano. Some people learn to play quite proficiently by ear, but they never become masters of the instrument. The truly great masters are those who studied diligently for many years, then practiced long hours each day for many years. Perhaps by the time they have reached the age of' 40 they have become artists.” "Green Light” is a romantic drama filmed from Lloyd C. Douglas’ bestselling novel of the same name. Others in the east besides Sir Cedric include Errol Flynn, Anita Louise, Margaret Lindsay, Walter Abel and Henry O’Neill. The adaptation for the screen was made by Milton Krims. Frank Borzage directed the picture.
