Advances totalling £10,000,000 to building societies for house erection was announced by the Premier, the Hon. B. S. B. Stevens, during the second reading of the Housing Improvement Bill in the Assembly. “This total of funds, now made available by banks, assurance societies, and other financial institutions, might be doubled, or even trebled, within a few years,” added Mr Stevens. “The Government’s housing policy envisaged 100,000 new homes in the next ten years. The Government’s scheme would ensure steady employment for 80,000 workers in the building trades.”
