OBITUARY
BISHOP OF WAIAPU. A Press message from Napier announces the death of the Rt. Rev. H. W. Williams, Bishop of Waiapu. Deceased was born at Waerenga-a-hika, Poverty Bay, in 1860, and was the son of Bishop W. L. Williams, and married in 1888 Bertha, daughter of S. L. Mason, of Edinburgh. He was: educated at Christ’s College, Christchurch; Canterbury College, Christchurch; Jesus College, Cambridge; Junior University Scholarship N.Z. 1876; Senior 1878; B.A. 1880; B.A. Cantab 1884; M.A. 1887; Assistant Maths, Master Harleybury College, England, 18856; Deacon 1886; Priest 1887; YicePrincipal Native Theol. College Gisborne 1888-94; Principal 1895-1902; Superintending Missionary East Coast district 1903; F.R. Met. Society 1904; Archdeacon of Waiapu 1907. MR H. C. MADSEN. The death occurred suddenly yesterday at Picton of Mr 11. C. Madsen, a former well-known resident of the Wairarapa. The late Mr Madsen, who was 60 years of age, and who was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends for his many excellent personal qualities, had been associated with newspapers all his life. He commenced first of all with the Greytown “Standard,” and was for a time its representative at Featherston. He was also a member of the staff of the Wairarapa ‘ ‘ Star, ’ ’ at Masterton. About thirty years ago he removed to Picton, where, in partnership with Mr G. W. Nicol, also a well-known ex-Wairarapa resident, he conducted the “Marlborough Press” up to the time of his death. He took a keen interest in sport, being an old Wairarapa representative cricketer, one of the first members of the Featherston Golf Club, a keen tennis player, and secretary of the old Featherston Gymnasium Club in the days when Mr Arthur Harvey, formerly of Masterton, was instructor’. On going to Picton he became closely associated with rowing, golf and other sporting activities, and the great success of the Marlborough Regatta over a long period of years was due in a large measure to his untiring work as secretary. The late Mr Madsen leaves a wife (nee Miss S. Toogood, of Featherston), one daughter Mrs Budge (Picton), ahd two sons, Messrs Max Madsen (Blenheim.) and Terry Madsen (Picton), also one sister, Mrs E. W. Neilsen (Masterton), and four brothers, Messrs Neil (Waitara), Harry (Martinborough), Alf-. (Pahiatua), and Frank Madsen (Masterton). The sympathy of a wide circle of old friends in the Wairarapa will be extended to the relatives in their bo reavement. MRS. J. LEIGHTON. The many friends of Mr J. Leighton, of Short St., will regret to learn of the death of his. wife,,.Bertha Helena, who died at the Public Hospital last night after undergoing a serious operation. She was admitted to the hospital on Saturday afternoon and her death was quite unexpected. The late Mrs Leighton, who was 58 years of age, was a member of the local Salvation Army Corps-, but the state of her health did not permit her to take a very active part. The late Mrs Leighton was held in high esteem by her many friends for her sympathetic disposition and her willingness at all times to assist those requiring help. Her death will be deeply regretted by all those who- knew her. She leaves, besides her husband, four sons (Robert, of Michael Street, George of Palmerston North, Joseph and Sturdee of Masterton), also a young daughter (Helen, aged 13 years).
The funeral will leave the Salvation Army Hall at 3 p.m. on Thursday following on a service there. MR. R. G. GREATHEAD.. The death occurred at the Masterton Public Hospital this morning of Mr Robert George Greathead. The deceased was 6S years of age. The late Mr Greathead spent a considerable time in Australia. He had also resided for some time in the Wairarapa and latterly in W-ellington. The interment will be private.
