The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday, Councillor Cheetham presiding, there being also present Councillors E. Judd, D. Bennett, A. Forsberg, F. W. Parry and A. It was decided that a special meeting be held on November 13 to consider the resolution for the abolition of riding accounts. The Eketahuna Dental Clinic applied for a subscription for its funds but the council considered that this was more a matter for the various school committees and the whole district concerned to deal with and the application could not be entertained. It was decided that fresh tenders be called for the construction of Hall Bridge, the plans already having been approved by the Public Works Department. The clerk submitted exhaustive particulars of the recent traffic tallies taken at the junction of Highways No. 87 and 443 for the information of the council.
The questionnaire from the Countries’ Association requesting the comments of the council in regard to this question was considered and replies were made which the clerk was directed to forward to the Association. It was decided to ask the Labour Department to extend the employment of two men for a further month in Scheme No. 13 for necessary improving of back roads and cutting corners etc.
The clerk was directed to write to the Wairarapa Automobile Association !to consider the necessity of taking steps to have a direction sign put at the corner of Hefty’s Eoad near the Kaipororo Cheese E’actory which would be of considerable advantage to the motor traffic at that point, there being no sign at present. The New Zealand Employers’ Federation wrote requesting the concurrence of the council with the industrial agreement entered into between local bodies and the Wellington Local Bodies Officers’ Industrial Union of Workers. The request was agreed to. The Health Inspector forwarded a very satisfactory report of his activities for the past half year showing particularly no infectious disease had occurred in the county during that time, and that drainage, plumbing and building works had been carried out in a very satisfactory manner. The Highways Board pointed out that the planking on the suspension bridge on No. 63 'Highway required attention and the overseer was instructed to inspect the bridge and submit a report for consideration at next meeting. The overseer reported particulars of work during the past month and prospective work was discussed and arranged for.
