FIRST LICENSED HOTEL

DESTROYED BY FIRE. WHANGAREI, This Day. The Northampton Castle, the first licensed hotel in New Zealand, was burned down on Sunday. The hotel stood near the Waitangi Falls, and was reputed to be 100 years old. W The occupants were Misses *me and Clara Press, aged 72 and 65 years, respectively, and they were admitted to the Kawakawa Hospital suffering from shock, being discharged yesterday. The building caught fire when a car burst into flames, setting alight to the gorse and tea-tree surrounding the hotel. Though the flames were extinguished, apparenty the fire was still ing in the matchlining, and later brok JT out again, and the building was stroyed.
