CARTERTON BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. D. L. Taverner) presiding. District fund accounts amounting to £662 2s lid were passed, also gasworks accounts for £315 17s. The Deputy-Valuer-General wrote advising that it would be necessary to appoint an assessor to act when the Assessment Court considered objections to valuations and that the appointment would be for a term of three years. It was decided that applications for the position be called by advertisement. The Inspector of Fire Brigades, Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, wrote 'advising"that'a consignment of masks as a protection for firemen against smoke was being ordered and asked what the borough’s requirements would be in this direction. The Town Clerk advised that four masks at a cost of 27s 6d each had been ordered. The'Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote forwarding a letter from an applicant for relief and asked for any recommendation the council had to make on the subject. The council decided that the matter be referred back to the Hospital Board for its favourable consideration.
The sanitary inspector, Masterton, wrote advising that lie had inspected residential premises in Carterton and forwarded an unfavourable report regarding same. A family made application for relief and submitted various information to present to the Hospital Board in support of the application. The application is to be referred to the Wairarapa South County Council as the case is in its district. Temporary relief is to be given by the borough in the meantime and adjusted later with the county. The Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, Oddfellows, wrote congratulating the borough on attaining its golden jubilee and at the success of the celebrations. It was decided that the Town Clerk acknowledge the letter and that the lodge be thanked for its courtesy. The Dalefield Co-op. Dairy Company, Ltd., wrote regarding the bad condition of the Dalefield Road on the boundary of the borough. The Mayor pointed out that application had been made through the Highways Board to take the road over as a main highway. The application would now be renewed, the board to be informed that the matter was urgent. Two applications for a second water supply to premises in High Street I were granted. The council decided that a clean-up of the borough be conducted during four months of the year, the borough vehicles to collect rubbish. A notice had been served on a resident in Brooklyn Road to trim trees which were a danger to .traffic passing over the railway line. Another case at Hilton Road corner was reported to the meeting and a notice is to be served on the owner to remedy the position. It was agreed that the water supply pipes be cleaned out with the aid of hydrants. The .contractor, who is treating the pipes with Tate system is to be requested to inform all residents in the locality when the water is to be turned off.
Two carriers applied for an increase in price for carting poles from the railway to the gas works. It was decided to call fresh tenders for the work. Regarding .the new award being applied for on behalf of gas works employees, it was decided by the gas committee that the same representatives as previously be appointed to represent the council at the dispute. The finance committee is to meet on Thursday to consider arrears of Tates. The plan for the proposed road between Fembroke Street and Broadway was placed before the council. It was decided that the plan be referred back to the surveyor for correction on the western boundary of the street. The council agreed that the section at the south side of the new school be leased to the Education Board for playground purposes, the tenancy to be only from year to year. The western boundary is to be sft. east of the tennis courts.
