Passengers by the Monterey, which left Sydney yesterday for Auckland., include Lady Kingsford Smith, who is bound for Los Angeles. Ht. Hon. G. W. Forbes,‘former Prime Minister and present member of Parliament for Hurunui, is spending a few days in Dannevirke as the guest of Sir Alfred and Lady Ransom. The Bev. Belshazzar Gina, of the Solomon Islands Mission, who was to have visited Masterton this week-end has found it necessary to postpone his visit owing to a touch of malaria fever. The engagement is announced of Miss Eileen Margaret Milner, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Milner, Maurieeville, and Mr George Frederick Corlet, only son of Mr and Mrs G. Y. Corlet, Victoria Street, Carterton. Mr N. Y. Brewerton, who for several years past has been on the staff of Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., in Masterton, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to the head office of the company in 'Wellington. Mr John Bovcy, who was killed in the explosion at Messrs. .Kempthorne Prosser and Co., N.Z., Ltd., Wanganui, recently, was well known in Masterton and district. He was a son of Mrs W. Bovey, Gordon Street, Lansdowne, and the late Mr W. Bovey, of. Tinui. Passengers on the Awatea, which left Sydney Last night for Wellington, include Mr B. 11. Nesbitt, former Australian Trade Commissioner for New Zealand and Dr. T. Z. Ivoo, the wellknown Chinese International Christian leader, who has been touring Australia. The Acting Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, announced yesterday that his Honour Mr Justice Page, President of the Arbitration Court, had been granted six months’ leave of absence, due to ill health. Arrangements were being made for a temporary appointment to the Court. The Martinborough branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has elected the following officers for the ensuing year: —President, Mr N. H. Thomas; vice-president, Mr F. Craig; secretary, Mr N. C. D. Mason; committee, Messrs J. Martin., E. Findlay, W. J. McNally, J. Jenkins; delegate to Central Committee, Mr N. 11. Thomas.

The changing of the guard was witnessed at Wellington Prison last night, when the staff met to bid farewell to Superintendent John Down, w r ho is retiring after 40 years’ service with the Department. A presentation of an armchair was made, on behalf of the staff, by Mr B. L. Dallard, Controllef-General of Prisons, and a clock was presented to Mr Down by Mr A. Longmore, on behalf of the Wellington Justices’ Association. Mr Down’s successor is Mr W. E. Stewart, at present Chief Warder of the Wellington Prison.

Mr J. Y. Gordon, who recently retired from the chairmanship of the Masterton West School Committee, was presented by members of the committee at the monthly meeting with a reading lamp and pipe. In making the presentation, Mr B. J. Weir referred to the sterling work carried out by Mr Gordon during the fourteen years he had served on the committee, twelve as chairman. The headmaster, Mr W. T. Armstrong,' said that the staff and children had found everything at the school made as pleasant as possible for them and the good work performed by the committee reflected much credit on Mr Gordon as chairman. Messrs F. Shearer, S. Perfect, F. W. Grigg and W. Y. Madden supported the remarks of the previous speakers. Mr Gordon, in acknowledging the gift, said lie very much regretted that he had found it necessary to resign. Superintendent T. B. Clark, of the Masterton Fire Brigade, has been awarded by the United Fire Brigades’ Association a gold Long-Service Star, on the completion of 25 years’ service as a fire-fighter. Superintendent Clark already holds two long-service medals, one presented by the United Fire Brigades’ Association for five years’ service up to Ist February, 1915, to which are attached a silver bar for two years ’ service and three gold bars, each for six years’ service. The other longservice medal was presented by the Wellington Fire Brigade on the completion of five years’ service in 1915 and to this medal are attached a silver two-year bar and a gold ten-year bar. Mr Clark was associated with the Wellington Brigade for 22 years and held the position of Deputy-Superintendent. He also holds the Diploma of the Institution of Fire Engineers of Great Britain'. Superintendent Clark has had charge of the Masterton Fire Brigade for the past three years and has been responsible for an extensive reorganisation. Last night a large party, including many visitors from Wellington and elsewhere, paid'a surprise visit to Superintendent Clark’s home in honour of his receiving his gold star. An enjoyable evening was spent and all joined in expressing tlieir heartiest congratulations to the guest of the evening on the completion of 25 years’ service.
