AGREEMENT SIGNED.
STEEL CONCERN AND UNION.
PITTSBURG, Wednesday.
The Carnegie Illinois Steel Corporation has signed an agreement . Avith the union granting it recognition, a Avage increase, a forty-hour Aveek, and other demands, thus ending the possibility of a general steel strike in the spring Avhieh proA'iously AA'as freely piedieted.
The agreement is the first A\-itli an independent trade union in the history of the United States Steel Corporation. The ncAvs was received Avith rejoicing in Washington by the Secretary of Labour, Miss Florence Perkins. It Avas announced that the NaA’al Department AA’ould immediately readvertise for bids for tAvcnty-five million pounds of steel urgently needed for n.UA'al construction. ft is indicated that officials feel, the settlement of the steel troubles is particularly timely, due to the an* nouncement that Britain Avill have 25 capital ships by 1942, and recognition that United States policy is to keep pace Avith the leader. Meanwhile five neAv strikes have begun at Detroit, bringing the total to nine.
The Motor Product Company and the Murray Corporation, which manufacture bodies and parts of motors, have closed doAA'n through a strike of 7000 employees. The Zenith Cnrbuiettoi Company' has closed doAA’n folloAving a strike of 750 Ayorkers, and tAvo large restaurants have closed through a sitdoAvn strike of Avaitresses and kitchen employees. Strikes are continuing in t.Avo other industrial plants and two Woolworth stores.
