MILITARY BALL

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.

There was a large attendance at the annual military ball held in the Town Hall last night, and those present had a most enjoyable time. The decorative scheme was carried out by Corporal J. Welch, who is to be complimented on the novel scheme evolved. A huge paper Union Jack formed the centrepiece. in the decorations, which were devised on a circular system. Tree ferns added an attractive touch of colour to the walls, while the stage was decorated with flags of several nationalities. The lights! were softened with prettily arranged circular shades. The green and gold of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment and the black and white of the Mounted Rifles were colours prominently displayed in the supper room, where the tables were adorned with a profusion of spring flowers. The men’s committee, which assisted with the decorations and also did much appreciated work, was as follows: — Lieut. I. A. Hart, Staff Sergt.-Major C. E. Rogers, C.M.S. A. MeWliinnie, Q.M.S. C. Osborne, Sergeants N. Sutherland, R. Dickason, C. Newland, Corporals J. Welch, R. Johnston, Lance-Corporal A. Green, Private R. Kilmister and Trooper R. Todd, while the secretaries were Sergeant C. C. Johansen and Private S. Lamb, who did their work well. Members of the ladies’ committee, which was under the direction of Mesdames I. A. Hart and C. E. Rogers, carried out their duties in a very commendable manner. In addition to doing much of the preliminary work, lady members of the committee were responsible for the arrangements and control of the splendid supper provided. The ladies’ committee was as follows. —Mesdames I. A. Hart, C. E. Rogers, C. Williams, J. Ninnes, A. Donald, B. Iveson, G. Beeeroft, C. Cuff and A. Newland.

The music was provided by the Wellington Military Dance Band and extras were played by Mackay’s Novelty Syneopators. Mr W. L. Butler worked the spotlight for several dances. A foil and sabre display, which was watched with much interest was given by Misses Z. Clarke (Wellington), J. Betts and B. Brown 1 (Masterton), Messrs J. Standisli, T. Wilson and SubLieut. R. Messenger (Wellington), members of the Wellington and Masitertom Fencing Clubs. Miss Clarke explained the chief points in the handling of the foil and the sabre.
