MAINE ELECTIONS

PRELIMINARY RETURNS REPUBLICANS LEAD. Press Association Electric Teleerapo—Copyright NEW YORK, Tuesday. Preliminary returns in the Maine elections indicated clear Republican majorities in four of five important offices, but apparently the victory is not sweeping enough to indicate the national trend toAvard Mr A. M. Landon that the Republican Party leadership hoped for.

With approximately half the votes counted, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Mr Barrows, has an over 20,000 votes lead over the Democrat, Mr Dubord. On the other hand, the Republican, Senator White, has only an 8000 plurality over his Democratic opponent, Mr Brann. Tho Republicans appear to have elected the State’s three representatives with moderate majorities.

A cable published on Monday stated that although no national issues are involved in the Maine elections, for a historical reason they are of tremendous psychological importance, since it is the only State holding elections in advance, of the national elections. The proverb has arisen, “As goes Maine, so goes the nation,” although this often has not been the case. The Governor and three Congressmen are being elected Avith the Republicans considered before the election as the likely victors, and the Democrats are trying to minimise the majorities in an attempt to counteract the Republican trend. The Democrats have revealed that some dozen Avealthy individuals, including several members of the Dupont and Rockefeller families, have donated in excess of £IO,OOO for the RepublL can campaign, although none of the donors is resident in the State of Maine.
