Even in the slump Masterton compared more than favourably, from a financial and business point of vieAV, Avith much larger towns in NeAV Zealand. Slowly, but surely, Masterton is returning to that position Avhen businessmen can see financial daylight ahead. Every additional man avlio is placed in a job assists to bring about better times by the money he puts into circulation. The Government Avould have been much Aviser had it decided to concentrate on Avhole-time employment for men instead of experimenting with a forty-hour Aveelc, Avhicli has not so far brought about the increased number of jobs some people imagined it Avould. As a matter of fact, the forty-hour Aveek has throAvn a number of men and Avomen out of Avork, and also resulted in the cancelling of privileges Avhicli many firms alloAved their employees; in other Avords, staffs have uoav to keep more “in the collar.” Masterton can overcome many of its present unemployment difficulties by presenting a united front and trading Avithin its own borders.
