LISBON BOMBARDED
PORTUGUESE REVOLT OFFICERS KILLED. Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Thursday. It is reported from Gibraltar that further naval mutinies occurred in the Tagus to-day,, officers being killed on board a warship, after which Lisbon was bombarded. Army revolts are also reported in severai garrisons,, officers being either killed or taken prisoner. It was announced in London at 10.30 p.m. that telephonic communication with Lisbon was unobtainable. It was earlier officially claimed at Lisbon that the Government could have prevented the earlier outbreak of mutiny on the warships Dao and Alfonso de Albequerque, lint there were advantages' from an internal and international' viewpoint in forcibly quelling the mutiny as a demonstration. Portugal has repeatedly told Europe that the' Spanish civil War is an international struggle on a national battlefield, and-in view of the territorial importance of Portugal those desiring a reign of anarchy here naturally have-' redoubled their efforts to aid the Spanish Reds. Portugal, it was stated, has been attacked and insulted by foreign newspapers, notably French and British, and the Government was therefore obliged to intensify its offensive against Communism. A decree issued to-night orders the oath of allegiance to the Constitution of-1933 to be sworn by holders of State posts, and professors at State colleges, while an oath to the flag must be isworn by members of the armed forces.
REPORTS DENIED. (Received Saturday, 9.50 a.m.) LONDON,. Friday. The Portuguese Embassy in London denies the reports from Lisbon of a further mutiny on Portuguese warships and in army garrisons, and also the bombardment of. Lisbon.
