THE DEFENCE SYSTEM.
The Minister of Defence announced the other day that he intended to overhaul the military training system of the Dominion, not with the idea of introducing compulsion, but for the purpose of putting it on a better footing generally. If the present volunteer system does not provide the necessary training, then the Minister will require to find a scheme which will. In one direction there should at once be an improvement brought about, and that is to increase the number of trained officers, so that, shtmld war break out, our raw material will have a reasonable chance of quickly obtaining efficiency. The slump has brought about a condition of things in regard to our youth which did not exist in the old volunteering days, and there are many disciples of the volunteer system who are beginning to arrive at the conclusion that a little compulsion would not be out of place in regard to military training, and that it would tend to make better citizens of youths who may be drifting in the direction of becoming irresponsibles.
