U.S.A. DROUGHT

NATIONAL PROBLEM. NEW YORK, Thursday. A message from Des Moines says that an event unprecedented in American politics took place to-day, when President Roosevelt and Mr A. M. Landon, the two- rival candidates for the Presidency, met at luncheon for the discussion of a vital national problem. The President, who is on a western tour of the drought area, called a conference of governors of the most vitally affected States, among which was Kansas. As chief executive of that State, Mr Landon met his opponent formally for the first time. After cordially greeting each other in public the two candidates, joined their colleagues for a technical discussion of the drought problem of the MidWestern States.

- It was emphasised by spokesmen for both men that the conference was nonpolitical. — (P.A,)
