JAPANESE TRADE
CHECK BY AUSTRALIA. AUCKLAND, Sunday. Comment on Australia’s stand against the flooding of the Commonwealth markets by Japanese goods Avas made by Mr E. Abbey Jones, managing director of the "Southland Ncavs,” Invercargil, avlio, Avith Mrs Jones, returned by the Mariposa from an extended tour of the East. It Avas pleasing 'to read, ho said, that Mr J. A. Lyons, CommonAvealth Prime Minister, and his Government had decided to stand firm as regards a higher duty on Japanese imports, and it Avould be interesting to see lioav Japan could obtain Avheat and avool from any other source, especially wheat, because of the Avorld’s shortage. Mr Jones connected the Australian attitude Avith the international situation. "It A\’ill hurt Japan more to buy wheat from Russia than Australia,” he commented. "Japan recognises the U.S.S.R. as its natural enemy, and any check on its objective of obtaining complete possession of Mancliukuo and other parts of China Avill come from Russia, Avith the. support of other interested nations.”
Mr Jones said lie thought that the tourist trade might Avith advantage be pushed in the East. Throughout Honolulu, Japan, Shanghai, Hong-Kong, Singapore and Java there Avas a dearth of tourist literature and advertising matter. There Avere no folders on any of the six vessels on Avhich he travelled, and leading hotels Avere also devoid of anything about Nerv Zealand tourist resorts. —(P.A.) REPORT CAUSES EXCITEMENT. (Received Monday, 10.40 a.m.) TOKIO, Sunday. Woollen manufacturers and exporters are excited at the report that South Africa is raising the duty on Japanese Avoollcn textiles, despite the statement of the South African Trade Commissi i.ner (Mr Brennan) that this Avas most unlikely, and Avould be impossible without the consent of Parliament. The Japanese Consul-General at Cape To’-vn informed the Foreign Office, that a South African manufacturer has asked the Government to raise the duty.
