SUSTENANCE.
The unfortunate position in regard to relief work and sustenance as revealed at the meeting of the Borough Council this week calls for special attention by the Government, because what applies in Masterton probably obtains in other parts of the Dominion. As we have pointed out on previous occasions, the sustenance policy is a most harmful one if made to" cover all men, fit or unfit. If sustenance is to operate it should do so only in regard to men who are unable to follow certain classes of work through physical disability. It should never have been allowed to bring about such a state of affairs as was revealed by the borough engineer at the Council meeting. Its scope of operation penalises the honest worker who tries to earn, a little more than the relief work provides, and especially is this hard on married men with families. If the Government wish to retain the respect and support of the genuine workers, then it must set about revising the unemployment policy in such a manner as will allow men on relief work to earn more money, and thus terminate a scandalous state of affairs.
