STOPPAGE OF WORK

A DISPUTE SETTLED. AUCKLAND, Friday. A stoppage of work in practically every department of the Westfield Freezing Works occurred to-day, when exception was taken to the dismissal of a slaughterman who is one of the leading officials of the union. About 600 workers were involved in the dispute, which was settled when the management reinstated the official. The foreman of the department dismissed the slaughterman, who is alleged to have been late in returning to work. This action was resented on the ground that it was unwarranted, and the men downed tools and walked from the floor. Similar steps were taken by workers in other departments. After a conference the dismissed man was unconditionally reinstated, and work Avas resumed Avithin an hour of the trouble, developing. —(P.A.)
