SIX 'PHONE CHANNELS
LINKING NORTH AND SOUTH. The recent repair of one of the Cook Strait cables by the. “Recorder” has enabled the Post Office to bring into use, this week, an additional telephone channel between the North and South Islands, making a total of six. Three are continuously in operation for communication between the North Island, Christchurch, and points further south and the West Coast. Of the remaining channels, two are used continuously for the busy traffic between Marlborough, Nelson and Wellington, while the third is available either for short or longdistance calls connecting the two Islands. Through the medium of the telephone the people of the North and South Islands keep in very close personal contact, judging by the number of effective speech minutes utilised on the three long-distance channels. From 22rul June until 3rd August, during the period 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m., the average was over 1000 speech minutes daily. From 6 p.m. to midnight, when half and quarter rates are operating, the daily average of 770 effective speech minutes was recorded in the same period.
