lii the game at Carterton on Saturday play lvas of a straggling nature in the first spell, the Stars not getting into their stride. In the second spell the Star backs began to function, and they gradually overhauled Martinborough’s .first spell lead and were having matters pretty well their own way in the closing stages, though Martinborougli defended stubbornly and were able to keep the Star win to a 3-point, one. The early stages of the game were somewhat similar to those in the match in which Stars met Carterton, at one period the score being: Martinbor* ough 11, Bed Star 3, the Martinborough score including two potted goals. Then four tries (one a penalty try for deliberate obstruction of Peterson) in succession put Bed Star in the lead. Martinborough lessened the gap with a penalty goal. Then M. Howard sold Martinborough (who were busily watching Peterson) a couple of neat dummies and scored, making the score. 20/14. Then Martinborough wound up with a try, and the final whistle went with Stars three points in the lead. For Bed Star tries were scored by Peterson (2, one an obstruction one), Johnson (2, one converted by Granthan), and M. Howard. C. Grantham kicked a penalty goal. For Martinboorugh, C. AUCKLAND BEAT SOUTHLAND.

INVERCARGILL, Saturday,

Greater all-round speed enabled the touring Auckland Rugby team to defeat Southland, 19/16, at Rugby Park to-day. The game began brightly, but developed into a dour forward struggle until half-way through the second spell, when there were some brilliant moves by both sides. The forwards were well matched. The backs adopted different tactics, Auckland depending on their fast flanks, while Southland, after losing Mitchell after 30 minutes’ play, sought ot penetrate in the middle. Mitchell, the Southland captain, opened the scoring with a good try, which Wesney converted. The Auckland backs handled, cleanly for Byerley to score. Bush converted. Auckland continued to attack, and Curtayne fielded a clearing kick and potted a goal. The Auckland forwards broke throug the middle of the field, and August finished a good rush by scoring. The Southland forwards broke through to the Auckland 25, and Mattingly kicked a goal from a penalty. Byerley (Auckland), after a strong run, cleverly threw in to Bush, who scored and converted. Play was exciitng as Southland rushed into Auckland territory. Caldcr made a good opening for Wesney to score for Southland. Mattingly converted. The crowd cheered wildly when Mattingly kicked a penalty goal and Southland was only three points behind. The Auckland defence, however, held against the onslaughts of the Southland forwards. —(P.A.) MANAWATU WIN. OAMARU, Saturday. In the first match, of its tour, Manawatu defeated North Otago, 17/11. — (P.A.) ASSOCIATION CODE. WAIRARAPA GAME. THIRD GRADE. Albion 7, Rangers 1. LEAGUE CODE. WIN FOR VISITORS. AUCKLAND, Saturday. In a hard and rugged game of Rugby League, England defeated New Zealand at Carlaw Park to-day by 10 points to 8. England scored two tries 4 and two penalty goals to 'New Zealand’s three penalty goals and a field goal. The weather was dull but fine. There was an attendance of 22,000. A feature of the match was the splendid showing of the home forwards, who overshadowed their opponents with the exception of scrummaging. New Zealand missed great opportunities through lack of finish. Outstanding players for England were Jenkins, fly-half, and Belshaw, full-back. The work of both these players was tipped with brilli-. ance.

New Zealand led at half-time, 2/0. England in the second spell used all the tricks in its locker, and only the valiant defence of the home team averted a bigger defeat. England monopolised the scrums, but for the most part its efforts were nullified by very sound tackling. The outstanding forward for New Zealand was Pickrang, who played a great all-round game; Hemi disappointed at full-back, and was well off in his kicking. For England, Edwards and Jenkins scored tries, while Hodgson kicked two penalty goals. Watene kicked three penalty goals for New Zealand, and Trevathan dropped a field goal right on time. —(P.A.)
