METHODIST CHURCH

AH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED.

FIRST ORGAN IN CHURCH,

The 60th anniversary of the placing of the first organ in Wesley Church was celebrated yesterday with inspiring services of joy and thanksgiving, in which music took a prominent part. The preacher for the day was Rev. G. F. Stockwell who in the morning preached on “Praising God in the Right Way.” At the morning service a strong junior choir sang the anthems “Love Divine ’ ’ and ‘ ‘ Simply Trusting. ’ ’ Instead of reading the lfessons for the day, two Psalms were effectively recited by Colin and Graham Lyttle, the former taking Psalm 121, and the latter the 100th Psalm. Misses D. O’Donnell and D. Wellington gave a delightful rendering of the popular duet, “The Wings of the Morning.” In the evening the service was. a choral one-, well-known hymns were heartily sung by the large congregation. Mesdames J. H. C'only, N. H. Prior and Burke sang with taste the trio ‘ ‘As * Torrents in Summer.” Miss Edith Ralph gave a much-appreciated rendering of the solo “Cast Thy Burden on the Lord. ’ ’ Mr Henry Jones, who was in fine voice, sang “The Garden of Prayer.” The choir rendered the anthems “What of the Night?” the soloists being Messrs W. Davies and H. J. Jones, and “Hear My Prayer,” the solo being beautifully rendered by Miss Doreen Jamieson. The service opened appropriately with “Jackson’s Te Deum. ” In thanking all who had assisted in the services Mr Stockwell made special reference to the work of the choirmaster (Mr S. H. Ralph) and organist, Miss A. M. J ones, L.A.8., who for so many years had together led the praises of the congregation, and congratulated them on their fine record.

THANKSGIVING SERVICE. In the afternoon members of the Wairarapa Methodist Bible Class Union gathered in the church over 150 strong for the annual Thanksgiving service. Every plate in the Wairarapa from Eketaliuua in the north to Featherston in the south was represented, a specially large representation from the latter place being noted. The service was under the chairmanship of Mr A. E. Bate, and was a very reverent and helpful one. A refined and telling address on the power ot love to help and bless the world was delivered by Miss A. E. Firth (Young Women’s: Travelling Secretary). A period was provided for silent meditation and intercession. A quartette, “I Surrender All” was rendered by the Misses D. O’Donnell and D. Wellington and Messrs E. A. Steer and Ralph Jones. After the Thank Offering the Dedicatory Prayer was offered by Mr Hadden Dixon, of Featherston. Hymns from the new Methodist Hymn Book suitable for the occasion were used. The meeting opened by the singing of a solo by Miss Doreen Jamieson, “I Will Sing of Thy Mercies” and the Vesper, also from the new Hymn Book, was “God Be in My Deed and in Mv Understanding.” It was a service long to be re- ! membered.
