BULLER GORGE RAILWAY

PROCEEDING APACE. WESTPORT, Saturday. Work on the Buller Gorge railway is proceeding apace. The distance between railhead and railhead is only 174 miles, but there is heavy embankment, bridging and tunnel work to do. Diesel shovels will be used where considerable excavation is necessary. The bridges vary frOm 200 and 500 feet in length, and one is up to. 50 feet high.

Although only' three weeks have elapsed since authority was received, to proceed with the work, over 100 men are on the job, largely establishing accommodation and doing other preliminary work. This number will be enlarged as quickly as possible, contingent on the availability 'of material and plant, until upward of 400 are engaged. It is estimated that the railway will be open for traffic in from two and a half to three years. —(P.A.)
