BEAUTY FOR GIRLS

A young girl’s chief charm is that she is young. Her look of youth is not just an effect created by artificial means; her beauty lies in simplicity and naturalness, in a clean, healthy body and a joyous spirit. Keeping that lovely look of fresh youth is not so simple as it sounds. It involves only a few commonsense cosmetics, but, like genius, it demands an infinite capacity for taking pains.

If you are still in your teens, you need these- helps to good looks and charm: Tooth paste, soap, cleansing cream, a perspiration preventive, hand lotion, manicure aids,, face powder, shampoo and wave lotion. Every one of these is important, but soap is indispensable. A girl who gives the impression of freshness —clean skin, clean teeth, clean hair, clean clothes —is always attractive. The daily bath, twice-a-day brushing of teeth and regular shampoo are the foundation of a beauty programme. # # * *

In the teens the skin needs -special attention. The oil glands are apt to become over-active at this age, and not only make the face unpleasantly oily, but encourage pimples and blackheads. A little extra oilinoss does not hurt anyone; it can easily be washed off, checked by drying skin lotions, and made invisible by powder. But blemishes do matter. I don’t blame any girl for being unhappy about them.

There are so many mistaken notions about blackheads that I am going to toll you just what they are, so that you will be able to deal with them more intelligently. When the oil glands are over-active, the pores may clog up and the tiny plug become tipped with black, partly because dirt clings to it, but mainly because of oxidation. These ugly little blemishes, which often form pimples, must be dealt with both internally and externally. I know it is disappointing to find out that there is no skin treatment which will keep your complexion clear if you persist in keeping late hours and eating party food recklessly. But that is the way things are. You must get your proper sleep

and lots of sunshine and fresh air; you must drink milk and eat plain, nourishing foods if you want a nice complexion. While following the rules for the inside, don’t neglect the outside. . There is no miraculous cream which w r ill give you a lovely complexion overnight. Cleanliness is the first essential for a good skin. Here is a simple nightly treatment: In order to remove face pow r der or other make-up easily, first use a cleansing cream or lotion. Then wash your face with a bland soap and warm —not hot —water. Rinse thoroughly, first with warm and then with cold water. If you have many blackheads, use a special preparation for this once or twice a week instead of soap. If you are troubled with eruptions, use an acne lotion or ointment. For cleansings during the day, if your skin is oily, use soap and water, a liquid cleanser, or a cream that washes aw r ay.

You may have to do some experimenting before you find the right powder base. Vanishing cream is used with success by many girls. The secret is to use it very stingily and spread it on evenly. Your powder should be pure, of medium weight, and a shade or so lighter than your own complexion, because just now fair skins are fashionable. Use an eyebrow brush to sweep the powder off brows and lashes every time you powder. In your teens you may notice that perspiration become troublesome. There are a number of good preparations to keep the under-arms dry. These you can use safely if you follow the directions. Always be sure that the skin is perfectly dry before putting on your dress. If you wear dress shields, it is a good idea to use a deodorant cream or powder under the arms. Fastidiousness about these little things not only saves you uncomfortable moments, but helps to keep your frocks clean and fresh.
