BEAUTIFYING THE STATION.

Any movement which has for its object the beautifying of the town of Masterton is worthy of the warmest encouragement at the hands of the people _of the town. Masterton to-day is under a debt of gratitude to the Beautifying Society for the splendid work it has carried out, and the Society is ever ready to provide the people with further evidence of its usefulness. The proposal' to beautify the surroundings of the Masterton railway station and to provide a “short cut” from Pownall. Street to the station is one that the people of the district will fully appreciate. In some countries —and even in Neiv Zealand — railway stations, which are usually drab affairs; are made attractive to the eye by gardens consisting of trees and flowers, and it will be readily admitted that such a scheme would greatly improve the appearance of the Masterton railway station area. As far as a thoroughfare from Pownall Street to the station is. concerned, a footpath .would provide all that was necessary. * The Railway Department appears to be anxious to do all it possibly can in regard to. this proposed improvement scheme, and in conjunction with the Beautifying Society, should be able to effect such an appreciable change at the station that residents will wonder why it had not been brought about years ago.
