MAORIS STAND FIRM. FURTHER ROTORUA STATEMENT. ‘ ROTORUA, This Day. At a further meeting of the Arawa tribe, held during the week-end, criticisms expressed as the result of publication of the tribe’s memorial to the New Zealand Rugby Union in regard to the Springbok tour, were considered, and the meeting was informed that the f Arawa attitude would be supported unanimously by the Waikato tiibes, which had considered the matter at a meeting at Ngaruawahia on Saturday, and by the Akarana Maori Association. Henare Ruru, one of the leading chieftains pf the East Coast tribes, and a prominent figure in Maori Rugby football,Bad also promised his support. Infa statement issued after the meeting, H. Tai Mitchell said that the criticisms so far expressed had all been from a parochial standpoint, whereas the Arawas were asking that the problem be dealt with as a national one. There were important questions, affecting the self-respect of the Maori race, at stake, and also the immunity of their womenfolk from insults that violated decorum and propriety. The Arawas and those who supported them stood four square upon the memorial. — (P.A.)
