(India compiled 271 and 161. Lancashire in the first innings made 234. GENTLEMEN v. PLAYERS. LONDON, Thursday. The day’s play in the annual cricket match Gentlemen v. Players resulted in a triumph for two bowlers, G wer (Players) and Stephenson (Gentlemen). The former was largely responsible for Gentlemen being dismissed for 130 runs, and Stephenson similarly played havoc with the Players’ wickets, the latter team having scored 176 for nine wickets at stumps. Bowling Wyatt with his. second bail, Gover began a sensational spell of 50 minutes in which he bowled seven overs, including two maidens, for 10 runs and four wickets. The Lord’s wicket was tricky owing to sunshine after rain. Tho Gentlemen’s score was 22 for six wickets, when Holmes and Brown became asosciated in a vigorous stand. The wicket was still difficult when the Players batted. Gimblett and Levland were dismissed off successive balls by the medium-fast bowler Stephenson, a young Army lieutenant, who must be seriously regarded as a candidate for Australia. Hammond played with his beautifuly characteristic fluency and his. brisk partnership with Ilardstaff produced 95 runs, enabling the Players to pass the Gentlemen’s total. Tho remainder of tho innings was a triumph for Stephenson, who dismissed Ilardstaff, Sinfield and McCorkell in four balls and Verity with the first ball of the next over.
