THE GAME IN WAIRARAPA,

NOTES ON THE PLAYERS,

(Contributed)

Never before has there been seen such splendid hockey as was witnessed at the 23rd June tournament, and especially in the semi-finals and finals. *****

The arrangements were perfect, and the committee who had the running of the tournament are to be congratulated on the way everything was run, and it does them credit.

The day had a few surprises, but not many. It was expected in some ters that Huia, Wellington,_ would annex the senior men’s section, but a very popular win by Stags was the verdict. * * * *

The semi-final between Stags and Carterton was a rattler, and it was anybody’s game right up till the call of time, when extra time had to be played, and Stags caught the White full-back out of position for Massey to take a pass from Clark for the deciding goal. * * * *

In the final, Stags defeated Kiwis in • a splendid exhibition of the game, and Kiwis were in no way disgraced. R. Clark, for Stags, is a speedy forward,* and B. Massey has pace and a splendid control of the ball, which is a great asset to any player. * *■ * *

High School juniors (men) were right up to Huias in the final, and had to go under to a more experienced team. They are to be congratulated on the fight they put up, and for a first season’s team were playing really firstclass hockey. ■ * * * *

In the women’s section, High School were a very fit team, and playing a fast and clean game, defeated Excelsior in the final. Here again speed and fitness prevailed. N. Spiers played one of her best games to date, and is a splendid half. J. Morice also played as one inspired, and With her passes to E. Madsen gave the latter a great record for shooting. Excelsior for a new team in the senior competition, made a great showing, and ran right through to the final, but were no match ior High School, who were too good f and played splendid hockey. * * * * Greytown and Gladstone have not got the speed, and had to go down to younger players. * * * * Junior Women. Old Girls and High School played off for the final, and here again training and fitnes prevailed, and Old Girls had to go under to a more experienced and fitter team, which is what I predicted in last week’s notes. * * * * Old Girls, for a new team, were not disgraced, as four out of the six players were playing in their first six-a-side tournament, and shaped very well. * * * * The tournament all round proved the worth of keeping fit, keeping position, and passing the ball across the forward line, which several teams failed to do. ’** * * I must congratulate High School on their wins in the women’s section and runners-up in the junior men’s, and it is going to boost hockey to a great length. The performance reflects much credit on their coaches and supporters, and must give their followers great satisfaction. * * * * St. John Brigade were in attendance, but, thanks to good grounds and clean games, their services were not greatly required, but they were always ready and waiting. The grounds were a great sight, and it must give the grounds committee considerable satisfaction. I never heard any complaints. * * * * Last Saturday Excelsior drew with Greytown on Greytown’s own ground, and proved the truth of the old saying that youth will prevail. * .if * * Gladstone ran over Old Girls to the tune of 6 to nil, and as I have commented, Gladstone will be a hard team in the second round, and are on the improve. ' * * * * St. Matthew’s, with more training, would have held or even beaten Te Ore Ore. At half-time St. Matthew’s were 1 up, but could not keep it up, and just failed. Miss Childs, as bully for St. Matthew’s, played a great game, and uses her knowledge well. E. Rutherford, at centre-half, was a great asset also to her team. * * * * Old Girls juniors came to life and defeated Excelsior by 3 to 1, in a fast and clean game. * * * * High School junior men went under to Dalefield by 1 to nil, and to my mind should not have changed their team around as they did, but it will be a lesson to them not to take a small team too cheaply. # # # The senior reps, travelled to Wellington and met a strong-Wellington team, ! and had to go under to them in a very fast and splendid game. The weakness seemed in the full-back, Byers, and Sayers in the forwards. Sayers is inclined to hang on to the.iball too long, and is caught in possession too 1 much; he forgets he has other forwards to help him.
