WAIRARAPA V. HAWKE’S BAY.

WIN FOR HOME TEAM.

HASTINGS, Tuesday.

In tlie first senior representative Rugby match of the 1936 season, played at Napier this afternoon, Hawke’s Bay defeated Wairarapa by 31 points to 17. The game was fast and open, both sets of backs having plenty of opportunities, which accounted for the high scoring. The weather was fine, there was no wind, and the ground was in good condiiton. The home team established a three-point lead a few minutes after the commencement of play, but Wairarapa caught up and held their opponents until rearguard attacks enabled Hawkes’ Bay to increase their lead to 17 to 8 by the interval. Hawke’s Bay’s points were gained by four tries, one penalty goal and one conversion, while Wairarapa scored two tries, one being converted.

In the second spell, Hawke’s Bay gained four more tries, one being converted, while Wairarapa scored one try and two penalty goals. Hawke’s Bay’s back line, comprising Clothier (half), Bradley and Aldrich (five-eighths), and Apsey, Grant and Johnson (three-quar-ters) was a better combination than the visitors’ rearguard, which consisted of Steffert (half), Devine and Howard (five-eighths), and Peterson, Lang and Eastwood (three-quarters). The handling of both sets of backs was good. The most spectacular incident occurred when Miller (Hawke’s Bay) scored after covering the whole length of the field to get his side out of a difficult position, when Wairarapa were besieging the goal line. The attendance was estimated at 5000. —(P.A.) JUNIOR MATCH. WIN FOR HAWKE’S BAY.
