EMPLOYMENT OF LABOUR.
The appeal which has.been made locally to place as many men as possible in regular employment has much to commend it, and we feel sure that the Borough Council, which in the past has always associated itself with any movement to make the lot of the unemployed easier, will do its best to assist in this connection. The 40hour week proposal may complicate matters, because emploj’ers may prefer to mark time, awaiting what will be the ultimate outcome of the Government policy. On the other hand, there are doubtless many employers who are prepared to make openings for new employees should there be a prospect of trade improving. Most employers possess those traits of character which extend sympathy to -neople suffering hardships, and are willing to absorb additional labour provided conditions will allow them to balance their trade budgets. In Masterton employers have done everything reasonably possible to keep their staffs intact, and now that trade conditions appear to be improving, they will doubtless meet the situation with the employment of additional men wherever possible.
